FOREWORD

Teaching today is a far more complicated profession that it was before. The rapid changing pace of educational development has brought about corresponding changes in the way we view teaching. Thus, while earlier on, we have always been content with testing and measuring students’ cognitive skills through traditional paper- pencil test.

There are indeed skills, abilities and competencies that could not be successfully assessed if one has to rely on traditional measurement procedures. Authentic assessment covering such techniques on portfolio assessment, offers an alternative to traditional test and measurement techniques. While the procedure is not yet extensively used in the educational systems, its potential for enhancing the teaching- learning process is now widely recognized.
This portfolio introduces the dimensions of a showcase portfolio which serves to elucidate the finer concepts that underlie authentic assessment. The portfolio includes student participation in selecting contents, the criteria for selection, the criteria for judging, students’ self- reflection and the evidence of students’ growth over time. Within the context of this definition, a portfolio continually grows and accumulates as the student progresses in the particular learning task. This portfolio assessment gives a profile of learners’ abilities in terms of depth, breadth and growth.
